Case Study 03 · Speculative

Cutting documentation burden in acute-care shift handoff

A focused redesign of one high-stakes clinician micro-flow — not a full EHR rebuild.

Role
Sole designer
Duration
2–4 weeks
Status
Scheduled — Weeks 5–6
Not yet built

Scheduled for weeks 5–6. Will be grounded in published literature (Black Book Research's 2025 EHR/burnout survey, AHRQ's alert-fatigue primer, SBAR/SOAP/PIE handoff frameworks), with proto-personas explicitly labeled as assumption-based rather than real research, a real competitor/comparator teardown, and directional (not fabricated-metric) findings from a small usability test. If real clinician interviews become available during this window, this case study's research will be upgraded from synthetic to primary.

Planned scope

Ground the tension in published documentation-burden and burnout data; build 1–2 proto-personas seeded from that data; teardown existing EHR/handoff tools; design one high-stakes flow in depth; run a small usability test with directional findings only.
